Parenting Through AI: How Artificial Intelligence Will Change Education

Hi parents! It’s DJ Stutz here, and today I want to talk about artificial intelligence (AI) and its growing impact on education. AI is already shaping how our kids learn, and as parents, it’s important to prepare them for the future while guiding them to use these tools wisely. Let’s explore how AI is changing education and what you can do to help your kids thrive in this new landscape.

AI-powered tools like personalized learning apps, virtual tutors, and even automated grading systems are becoming more common in schools. These technologies can adapt to your child’s learning pace, making lessons more engaging and effective. For instance, apps like DreamBox or Khan Academy use AI to provide tailored math or reading lessons, helping kids master concepts at their own speed.

While these tools offer great opportunities, they also come with challenges. One concern is over-reliance on technology. Encourage your kids to see AI as a supplement to their learning, not a replacement for critical thinking or problem-solving. AI is capable of making errors and has been discovered to show the bias of the people who created the program. So be sure to look for additional documentation and original sources where you can. Remind them that technology can’t replace the value of human interaction and collaborative learning.

Unfortunately, there have been increasing cases where malicious individuals use AI to connect with and exploit children. Discuss topics like data privacy, algorithm bias, and the importance of verifying information. These conversations will help your child develop a healthy skepticism and a responsible approach to technology.

Finally, emphasize adaptability and lifelong learning. Chances are, the skills your child needs for future careers may not even exist yet, so fostering curiosity and flexibility is key. The availability of AI is an opportunity for us to learn more, not to just rely on technology for our future knowledge base.  Those who succeed in the future will be those with a curious mind and those who have the work ethic to follow that curiosity and create something new. Encourage them to explore new tools, ask questions, and stay open to change.
